Second City Sound is the only female barbershop and show chorus in Birmingham. Our Music Director, Rob Barber, is dynamic, energetic and a gold medal winner in his own right. Our aim is to push the boundaries of singing excellence, musicality and performance. We perform across the West Midlands to bring our art and craft to as many people as possible. From time to time we enter prestigious national and regional competitions. We enjoy learning to develop our singing and performing techniques. We have a varied repertoire which is regularly updated, to keep us fresh and new.

About Us

The Chorus was started by Olive Ryder and a couple of her friends  in her front room in 1990. From these humble beginnings we have now grown into a much larger chorus and are a group of women who love to sing and have fun. We have now become a charitable organisation that unites women from around the West Midlands and further afield.

We are a friendly, caring group of people, who have found and developed lifelong friendships on the steps of the risers. We have positively influenced each other’s lives, building confidence, laughing a lot and enhancing our vocal abilities. We welcome new members to join us in our hobby and we would love to share with them all the positivity that surrounds us.

We also organise, develop and promote our own shows at a variety of venues, using our unique blend of barbershop, close harmony and dynamic show songs.

Contact Us

The chorus accepts invitations to many types of events, small and large, for example, appearing on shows, singing at a variety of corporate and charity events, weddings, civil partnerships and celebrations of life events. We can develop our programme to suit any occasion.

If you think a chorus may be too big for your occasion, you might want to consider a quartet. We have a silver medallist quartet within our chorus who are always ready to sing.

Want to Sing?

If you are interested in singing with us, we meet every Monday evening, except bank holidays, throughout the year at Grove Vale Primary School, Monksfield Avenue, Great Barr, Birmingham B43 6AL.

Rehearsal time is 8.00 pm to 10.00 pm. We warmly invite you to come along and have a listen and even join in with warm ups. Get a taste of close harmony singing and whether it is for you. Our rehearsals are a mixture of vocal craft sessions and song learning. We have regular coaching sessions with some of the best coaches in the country and every rehearsal includes a great deal of laughter and fun. (At the moment, due to COVID restrictions, we are meeting in the playground at the back of the school and 7.00 pm. There will be people who will guide you to our singing space.)

If you have any questions you would like answering you may contact us via our membership secretary Elaine Mobsby on 0121 384 4729, or use our contact form.

Other more general queries can be addressed to the club secretary, Sandra Moss using the contact us form at the end of this page

    Gallery Archive

Here you can view a pictorial archive of some events and performances where Second City Sound were major participants  both on and off stage! We take our performance very seriously as we always wish to produce our best entertainment for our audiences, but many of us also like to let our hair down a bit and enjoy an “Afterglow” where we will mingle with the public and usually give an impromptu performance or two. We love to sing!
